علامہ اقبال سے پوچھا گیا کہ “مذہبی آدمی” کون ہے؟
جواب: “مذہبی آدمی وہ ہے جس کی پیاس سائنسدان سے زیادہ ہو”

The above statement exists in the first lecture of Allama Iqbal’s book (Reconstruction of Religious Thoughts in Islam), titled “Knowledge and Religious Experience.”In this chapter, Iqbal explores the relationship between the Scientific Method and Religious Intuition.
He writes:
“The Religious Man is a mystic whose thirst is greater than that of the Scientist.”
QURANIC DEFINITION OF “AL-ULAMA العلماء”

اَلَمْ تَرَ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ اَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاۗءِ مَاۗءً ۚ فَاَخْرَجْنَا بِهٖ ثَمَرٰتٍ مُّخْتَلِفًا اَلْوَانُهَا ۭوَمِنَ الْجِبَالِ جُدَدٌۢ بِيْضٌ وَّحُمْرٌ مُّخْتَلِفٌ اَلْوَانُهَا وَغَرَابِيْبُ سُوْدٌ

(سورة فاطر , آیت 27)

(سعادت مند اور صحیح الدماغ لوگوں کو اس سے تعجب ہوتا ہے کہ لوگ‘ اس قسم کی منفعت بخش‘ واضح اور بصیرت افروز تعلیم ‘ کی مخالفت کیوں کرتے تھے (اور کیوں کرتے ہیں)۔ لیکن یہ بات کچھ ایسی تعجب انگیز نہیں۔ لوگوں کی ذہنیتوں اور طبعیتوں میں اختلاف ہوتا ہے۔ اور یہ اختلاف تمہیں ہر جگہ نظر آئے گا۔ لیکن وحی کے اتباع سے یہ اختلاف مٹ جاتا ہے)۔ ذرا غور کرو کہ بادلوں سے ایک جیسا پانی برستا ہے لیکن اس سے مختلف نوع واقسام کے پھل پیدا ہوتے ہیں۔(یہ نہیں ہوتا کہ سب پھل اور فصلیں ایک جیسی ہوں)۔ اور پہاڑوں کو دیکھو کہ ان کا مادہ ءتخلیق ایک ہی تھا‘ لیکن ان میں مختلف رنگوں کے خطے ہیں…. کوئی سفید۔ کوئی سرخ۔ کوئی کالا بھجنگ۔

(Obedient and rational people wonder why such benevolent, clear and eye-opening knowledge was opposed? And even now it continues to be opposed. However this is not all that strange. People’s mind-set and attitudes are different from each other, and you will see this everywhere. This can be eliminated by following Divine Guidance.)Don’t you see how water comes down from the clouds, following which different fruits of varied colours are produced. (It does not happen that all fruits and crops are the same.) And look at the mountains. Although you observe streaks of white and various shades of red as well as others which are jet black, these mountains are basically the same.

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ وَالدَّوَاۗبِّ وَالْاَنْعَامِ مُخْتَلِفٌ اَلْوَانُهٗ كَذٰلِكَ ۭ اِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللّٰهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمٰۗؤُا ۭاِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَزِيْزٌ غَفُوْرٌ

(سورة فاطر , آیت 28)

اسی طرح انسان‘ دیگرحیوان اور مویشی بھی مختلف قسموں کے ہیں۔ صحیفہ ِفطرت کے یہ اوراق‘ جو اللہ کے قوانین کی زندہ شہادات ہیں سب کے سامنے کھلے رہتے ہیں‘ لیکن ان قوانین کی عظمت کے سامنے وہی لوگ جھکتے ہیں جو ان شہادات پر علم وبصیرت سے غوروفکر کرتے ہیں۔ یہی لوگ ”علما ء“ کہلانے کے مستحق ہیں‘ اور یہی جان سکتے ہیں کہ اللہ کا قانون کس قدر غلبہ کا مالک ہے‘ اور جو اس کے مطابق چلتا ہے‘ وہ سے کس قدر سامانِ حفاظت عطا کرتا ہے۔

The same applies to men, animals and cattle of various kinds. Such creations of nature are living proof of the working of Divine Laws. However only those who reflect over them with Intellect and Reason bow in submission to Him. Only they deserve to be called ‘the Scholars, the Scientists; and only they can comprehend how over-powering and supreme Allah’s Law is. Whoever lives accordingly is provided with sufficient means of protection.
